Sec 3 & 4 Biology · Pure and Combined
Upper Sec Biology. Pure and Combined. Exam Ready.
KLS's Upper Secondary Biology classes follow MOE's latest syllabus for Pure and Combined Biology, from cells and enzymes to the human body, ecosystems and genetics. Students learn to explain each process step by step, in the precise words that exam answers need.

What we cover
The Biology syllabus, topic by topic
Following MOE's latest syllabus for Sec 3 & Sec 4, building up to the SEC national exam (which replaces the O-Level from 2027).
Cells and the Chemistry of Life
| Topic | What your child learns |
|---|---|
| Cell Structure and Organisation | Plant and animal cells, the parts of a cell and what each does, and how cells are organised into tissues, organs and systems. |
| Movement of Substances | Diffusion, osmosis and active transport, and how they move substances into and out of cells. |
| Biological Molecules | Carbohydrates, proteins and fats, the food tests that identify them, and how enzymes work. |
The Human Body: Maintaining Life
| Topic | What your child learns |
|---|---|
| Nutrition in Humans | The digestive system, how food is broken down and absorbed, and the role of the liver. |
| Transport in Humans | The heart, blood vessels and blood, and how substances are carried around the body. |
| Respiration in Humans | Aerobic and anaerobic respiration, and how the lungs exchange gases. |
| Excretion in Humans | How the kidneys filter the blood and remove waste. |
| Homeostasis, Co-ordination and Response | How the body keeps conditions steady, and how the nervous system, the eye and hormones control responses. |
| Infectious Diseases in Humans | How diseases spread, how the body defends itself, and the role of vaccines and antibiotics. |
Living Together: Plants, Animals and Ecosystems
| Topic | What your child learns |
|---|---|
| Nutrition and Transport in Flowering Plants | Photosynthesis, leaf structure, and how water and food move through a plant. |
| Organisms and their Environment | Food chains and webs, energy flow, the carbon cycle, and the effects of people on ecosystems. |
Continuity of Life
| Topic | What your child learns |
|---|---|
| Molecular Genetics | DNA, genes and chromosomes, and how genes control the making of proteins. |
| Reproduction | Cell division, and sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and humans. |
| Inheritance | How traits are passed on, genetic diagrams, and variation. |
Common mistakes
Where Sec 3 and 4 students lose marks in Biology
Biology is less about calculations and more about precise words. An answer can show the right idea and still lose marks because a key term is missing. These are the mistakes that cost students the most, in both Pure and Combined Biology.
-
Leaving key terms out of definitions
Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential, through a partially permeable membrane. Drop “net”, “water potential” or “partially permeable” and the marks go with them.
-
Saying enzymes are “killed”
Enzymes aren't alive, so they can't be killed. At high temperatures they are denatured: the active site changes shape, so the substrate no longer fits and no enzyme–substrate complexes form.
-
Saying respiration “produces” energy
Energy can't be made. Respiration releases energy from food in every living cell. It's also not the same as breathing, which moves air in and out of the lungs.
-
Describing when the question says explain
“Describe” a graph means give the trend and quote figures with units. “Explain” means give the biological reason for it. Answering one when the question asks for the other scores little.
-
Incomplete genetic diagrams
A full genetic diagram shows the parents' phenotypes and genotypes, their gametes, the offspring's genotypes and phenotypes, and the ratio. Skipping the gametes or using letters inconsistently loses marks even when the final ratio is right.
-
Mixing up xylem and phloem
Xylem carries water and mineral salts up from the roots. Phloem carries sugars made in the leaves to other parts of the plant. Swapping the two is one of the most common slips in plant transport questions.
How we fix them
Your child's free diagnostic assessment shows which of these gaps they have. In class, tutors teach each process step by step and show the key terms that answers need, so your child's answers are precise as well as correct. Pure and Combined Biology are taught in separate classes, and every lesson is recorded for revision.

Close collaboration between parents and tutors is usually only found in 1-to-1 coaching. At KLS, every group-class family gets the same attention and partnership.
-
A private group chat for every student
Your child, you and the tutor, together in one chat. Not a class group: just your family and the tutor.
-
Weekly homework updates
See what's assigned each week and how your child is progressing, so nothing slips through.
-
Every milestone, celebrated together
A better test, a tough topic finally clicking, a new personal best. We celebrate it with you.
-
Open discussion, anytime
Have a concern or question? Raise it directly with the tutor and talk it through.
“They also have a personalized group chat for us together with the tutor, allowing me to track what Jamie is learning and ensure she completes her homework. This partnership has boosted Jamie's morale, and we have cute moments like celebrating her improvements and milestones (getting good grades).”

Received
Submitted through the student portal (2 pages) and marked.
Report
Q11, 12 and 15 all correct, with every step named and labelled. Q18 lost one step: the radius was taken from the diagram instead of worked out from the given area. Worked in full in the marked copy.
